Family History Project

My name is Lauren Stubbs.  This is a project I completed about my family history. I gained a lot of knowledge through doing this project, and I was surprised at a lot of the information I learned. I had many ways of gathering information for this project.  To get started, I interviewed my mom.  I then interviewed my grandma.  They gave me some very helpful information, but I still needed more.  To get more information from my dad's side of the family, I e-mailed him. With all of this information, I was able to make a family tree using Family Echo.  I was also able to make a Prezi, Infographic, and a 5-Frame Storyboard using all the information I gathered.
This is the Prezi I created from my family history:

This is my Family History Inforgraphic:
I also made a 5-frame storyboard.  This is of my brother looking through a photo album.

I agree with this video.  It shows how unsocial our society has come, and how it needs to change.  We all need to stop texting, tweeting, and posting and start living our lives so we can experience the world and the people in it.  We don't want to regret what we didn't do when we are old, so we should start living out lives without as much technology and with more people.

Read THIS blog post by a teacher. I mean actually read it. Take it in. Think about it. And then, write about it. What do you think about it? What is the teacher trying to say? In your own words explain what "the main event" is.

I think this teacher's blog post is very motivational. I makes me want to work harder at everything.   It also shows what the most important thing in school is.  He is trying to tell students to not quit, and to work harder not just on school work, but also in "the main event of school".  I think that this main event is what we are really in school for.  We are in school to learn, but also for the bigger picture.  The bigger picture is how to solve problems in life, how to get back up after something bad happens, and how to respect.

Reflect on your stop-motion animation project. How did it go? What worked? What didn't work? If you're not finished - why? If you are finished go in to detail about the project and what you learned.

I think my stop-motion video is good.  It didn't take me long to do and it was fun to see the end result.  I thought that Movie Maker was easy to use.  If I did this project again, I would use something to keep my camera steady instead of just trying to keep my hand still.  My video is about 35 seconds and it has about 180 pictures in it.

What is your idea for your stop-motion animation? Explain yourself. Have you started taking photos? If not, when do you plan to take your photos? What is your action plan for today? What is your plan to GET SOMETHING DONE?

For my stop-motion animation, I am going to do something with paper.  I am not sure yet what exactly I will do, bu i am going to think more about this and figure out an idea during this class period.  I will also start taking pictures today, if not in class, then at home.

Tell me about your 5 frame storyboard. What did you like about the project? What did you dislike? Was it hard to fit a story in to 5 images? Do you think you tell a clear story? What would you do differently if you could? Explain.

My 5 frame storyboard is of my brother playing basketball.  It was easy and fun to make, and it is an engaging way to tell a story.  One thing I don't like about this project was not using words.  For m, it wasn't hard to tell a story in five pictures.  I think my story was clear and the point got across.  If I had more time, I probably would have been able to come up with a more creative story.

What is a storyboard? If you don't know, what do you think it is? How are storyboards used? What are some different ways that storyboards can be made?

A storyboard is a tool used to plan out a book, story, or something like that.  Storyboards are helpful because they create a plan for you to follow while you create a story.  They are usually easy to make and they are easy to follow. They can be made by making a chart and writing different ideas in each box to make a full story.

Did you get your pictures taken yesterday? Did you enjoy going on the photo scavenger hunt? Why do you think I had you take those types of pictures?

We did get our pictures taken yesterday.  We were able to get at least one picture of every item that was on the scavenger hunt. I enjoyed doing the scavenger hunt because I like to take pictures and it was something fun and different.  I think we took those pictures because they are easy to edit and the pictures were easy to take.

What do you know about photography? When you take pictures what kind of camera do you use? Do you use your cell phone? Do you own a digital camera that is not your cell phone? Explain.

I don't know very much about photography.  When I do take pictures, I use my cell phone because I always have it with me and I have easy access to the pictures I take.  I do have a digital camera, but I rarely use it because I think that it is easier to use my phone.

Welcome back! How was your Spring Break? Tell me all about it. You've been out of school for 10 days so I know you will have plenty to share. Make it good!

This spring break, I mostly stayed home.  I hung out and watched basketball with my brother, had volleyball practices, and read.  For the last four days of spring break, I went to Indianapolis for a national qualifier volleyball tournament.  We finished 5th place, which was a little disappointing, but overall it was a good tournament for us as a team.  While I was there, I also saw the movie Divergent.  I was expecting the movie to not be very good, but I actually really liked it.  Overall, I had a good and relaxing spring break.

Infographic

March 5

What is the significance of an infographic? What is the point of pairing graphics and information together? What impact can this have on a reader or viewer. EXPLAIN.

An infographic is something that shows information visually. They are helpful to people because they allow quick and easy access to information on a topic.  Infographics also make information easier to understand because the actual information is paired with graphics. Infographics display information in a way that makes it easier and faster to understand.  Pairing graphics and information makes learning about the topic easier and more engaging to the viewer.

If you had the option of writing a 3 page paper or creating an infographic - which one would you choose? Explain yourself.

I would create an infographic.  In my opinion, infographics are easier to make because all you need to do is put in the facts, you don't need to have an introduction or conclusion. I also think that infographics are more fun to create.

February 28

How far along are you on your infographic? Will you be finished and ready to embed on to your blog by the end of the hour today? Do you think you've used your time wisely in class? Explain yourself.

I am about 3/4 of the way done with my infographic.  If I keep going at the same rate, I should be done by the end of class today so I can embed it on to my blog.  I have used my time wisely .  I have taken a lot of time on my infographic so it is quality work.

February 26

Why do I have you brainstorm and collect your information in a Google Doc before putting in to final draft? Explain.

We brainstorm because it makes the final draft easier.  When all of the information that is going to be used is in one document , all we need to do is put that information into the final draft and work on making it look good and presentable, which makes the whole process easier and faster.

Yesterday I introduced you to infographics... tell me again what they are and how they are used? What is the benefit of an infographic? What goes into an infogrpahic?

An infographic is a way of displaying information visually.  They are used to help people get information fast and in a fun way.  The benefit of an infographic is that information is appealing to readers.  A few of the things that may go into an infographic are facts, pictures, quotes, and statistics.

School Shootings Paper

My global issue paper is over school shootings.  School shooting are a sad occurrence in which gun violence takes place at an educational institution.  Sadly, they often occur in death or injury.  Although school shootings are very rare, they are still a big problem in today's society.

Where are you at with your 5 paragraph essay so far? How is it coming? Is it easy to write? Difficult to write? Is it helpful that you created an outline first? Explain.

I have finished two paragraphs so far. My paper has been hard  to write and has taken a long time.  It has proven to be very helpful to have an outline while I write my paper.  Normally I don't use an outline, but I probably will use an outline for papers more often now that I know how helpful they can be.

Tell me about your Sweetheart weekend. If you didn't go to Sweetheart, what did you do? I want details!

This weekend I did not go to sweetheart, but I did watch a very disappointing KU basketball game.  I also went to the movies with my friends and saw Ride Along.  Even though my friends thought it was a bad movie, I really liked it.  I slept in Sunday morning and then went to volleyball practice.  Then I watched the Superbowl and got to bed early for school.

Who do you look up to in life? Why? What have they done to help you or guide you?

I look up to my mom.  My mom has always been there for me and she always supports me.  I look up to her because she works as a lawyer and still always makes tome for my brother and me.  When I am older i wan to be able to do work and have time for family like she does.  She is a great person and I know she will always be there for me.

Tell me about the global issue you selected yesterday. Briefly restate your paragraph from yesterday.

The global issue I chose is school shootings.  I chose this topic because shootings in school are becoming more common.  I want to learn what is being done to stop this issue and other possible solutions for it as well.

Public Service Announcement

January 27

If you could pick one issue in the world to fix or change what would it be and why?

I would end world hunger.  I think is a huge problem how people throw out millions of pounds of food each year while there are people dying of hunger.  Food is one of the necessities of life and if people don't or can't have it, they can't survive.  This problem may not have the easiest fix but if it is fixed, the world would be a much better place.

What is a Public Service Announcement? If you don't know what it is, Google it. In your own words, now tell me what it is? What are they used for? Can you recall an example of a PSA you've seen before?

A public service announcement is a slideshow/ video that brings attention to a problem that the world or community is currently facing.  They usually tell what the problem is and how you can help to fix it.  Many public service announcements are sad so they can get people's attention and got them motivated to try and help the problem.  An example of a public service announcement that I have seen was trying to stop drinking and driving.

Tell me about your three day weekend. How was it? What did you do? Elaborate!

I had a good weekend.  On Saturday I had a volleyball tournament that my team won.  I went to bed early and slept in late.  It was awesome! On Sunday I did homework and went to my brother's basketball game.  That night,  My family went to the play Romeo and Juliet.  I thought it was a good play, but i couldn't completely understand what the actors were saying.  Monday I relaxed and watched the KU basketball game.  Overall, I had a good 3-day weekend.

What have you learned about Google Drive and Google Presentation so far? What do you like about it? What problems have you run in to? Is it better than PowerPoint? Explain.

I have learned that there are many different kinds and ways you can use Google Presentation.  There are so many settings and layouts that you can make your presentation exactly how you want it.  Google Drive is also very helpful because it has all of my Google files on it, in one place.  I like Google Presentation more than PowerPoint because it is easier to figure out and manage.

Tell me if you agree with this statement and then explain why or why not. "Images on the internet are 'free game' - if someone posted I should be able to use it."

I do not agree with this statement.  When someone posts a picture on the internet, they should know that their picture can be used and seen by almost anyone in the world, but most often, they do not know this.  Many people post personal pictures that they don't plan on or want others to see.  Mainly, for the reason of privacy, I don't believe that every picture someone posts to the internet should be able to be used by other people because everyone deserves privacy, whether they are smart about it or not.

What do you want to learn in the class the semester? What information do you want to walk away with that you didn't know before? Elaborate!

This semester I would like to learn more about how to use technology on computers.  There are many programs on computers that I don't know how to use, or don't know how to use well.  There have been many instances in class when were using a program such as prezi, and I didn't fully know how to use it and this made the project a lot harder for me.  Prezi is only an example of a program I would like to get to know better.  There are many more programs that I want to get to know.  Mainly, I want to walk away with more knowledge not only on how to navigate and work programs but also how to solve problems that I encounter while I am on the computer.  I have encountered many problems on the computer and there was nothing I could do.  It would be great if I could learn to be a better problem solver by the time the semester is over.
